Abstract The seed oils of two species of Pittosporum Banks ex Soland.apud Gaertn., Pittosporum tobira (Thunb.)Ait. and P.crispulum Gagnep.,were extracted with organic solvent and the fatty acids(FAs)in the seed oils were separated and identified with gas chromatorgraphy(GC).All the seed oils contained 6 kinds of FA including two main FAs,palmitic acid(C 16∶0 )and oleic acid(C 18∶1 ).The compositions of main FAs in the two species were palmitic 29.66%,34.72% and oleic 66.43%,62.54%,respectiveby.Oleic acid was the major component of the seed oil.The oil quality is excellent by virtue of the high proportions of MUFA. This fact suggests thar the seed oils of Pittosporum plant is worth to be exploitd as a health protecting oil.
