Abstract The physico-chemical characteristics and fatty acid composition of the seed oils of the Proteaceae Gevuina avellana Mol. Lomatia hirsuta (Lam) Diels and Embothrium coccineum Forst have been examined. It is shown that these oils are very rich in hexadecenoic acid (22,0 to 23,1 %) , according to the published value of the seed oil of Macadamia ternifolia . The three oils considered are of the "non drying" type and are somewhat different in their acidic compositions. The Gevuina avellana Mol seed oil contains saturated acids in C10 to C24, 11-12 hexadecenoic, oleic, linoleic, 11-12 eicosenoic, 13-14 docosenoic, 9-10 docosenoic and tetracosenoic acids. The 11-12 hexadecenoic acid has not been previously mentioned as a naturally occurring fatty acid. The most pronounced characteristic of the Proteaceae seed oils seems to be their very high content in hexadecenoic acid.
