Abstract Seeds of Lagenaria vulgaris (calabash, Cucurbitaceae) contained 48.6% fat (a light green oil), 38.2% protein, and had a calorific value of 597 kcal/100 g seed kernel. Fatty acids in the seed oil include: palmitic 42.41%, palmitoleic 0.81%, stearic 6.70%, oleic 9.67% and linoleic 40.42%. Sugars present were: rhamnose 4.0%, fructose 12.8%, glucose 16.5%, galactose 12.7%, sucrose 36.2%, raffinose 9.3% and stachyose 8.5%.
