Abstract Seed oils of Torreya nucifera and Cephalotaxus drupacea were examined by determination of the fundamental analytical constants, the acidic composition and the sterol composition of unsaponifiable matter. The oils show a very similar qualitative and quantitative constitution, with the prevalence of oleic and linoleic acids. The identified sterols were beta-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol and small quantities of cholesterol and delta5-avenasteroL
