Abstract Seeds of Holoptelea integrifolia Planch. (family Ulmaceae ; Indian names Kanju, dhamna, etc,) collected around Sagar were extracted, in dried powder form, successively with petroleum- ether (60-800), benzene, ether, acetone and alcohol, and finally macerated with a mixture of water and chloroform (9 : 1). Presence of carbohydrates, colouring matter, fixed oil, free acids, glycosides, sterols, tannins, proteins and free amino acids were observed in these extracts. The constituents of the fixed oil have been identified. Earlier the physico-chemical constants of the fixed oil are only reported. The fixed oil (35%) has been extracted from the powdered seeds, with specific gravity at 300—0.9112, n20D — 1.4320, acid value — 1 72 saponification value — 202, iodine value — 83, acetyl value 9.2 and unsaponifiable matter — 3.5%.
