Abstract Dutta, J., and Ghosh, Amitabha (Department of Chemistry, Bose Institute, Calcutta 9, India): Fatty Acids of Sesame Oil by Urea Fractionation and Gas-Liquid Chromatography. Trans. Bose Res. Inst., 35 (1): 5-11, 1972. The fatty acid composition of sesame oil has been determined by fractionating the mixed methyl ester by urea adductation and subsequent gas chromatographic analysis of the fractions. The gas chromatographic analyses were carried out on two different columns, viz. diethylene glycol succinate (DEGS) and silicone gum rubber GE-SE-30, both being supported on Gas-chrom-Z. The oil was found to be rich in palmitic (C16), oleic (C18 :1) and linoleic (C18:2) acids, the percentages of which are about 15, 40 and 39 respectively. Of the trace fatty acids, C14 to C30 saturated acids both even and odd, monoene of C14, C10, C17, C18 and C20, dienes of C18, and tri- and tetraenes of only C18 acid were found. The mode of distribution of fatty acids in different urea fractions has been discussed.
